Australian Football League vs National Rugby League: Nordic force across the years (2016-2021)

News & AnnouncementsLast Updated:

What does Nordic force look like across the years in the AFL and NRL?

The following data are from more than 45,000 and 20,000 Nordic tests conducted in the Australian Football League (AFL) and the National Rugby League (NRL), respectively, since the introduction of VALD’s NordBord Hamstring Testing System in the 2016 season.

The distribution of results, the median and the interquartile range are displayed for each season.

Nordic force across the years: AFL vs NRL

AFL

The distribution of Nordic force results has not changed significantly since the introduction of the NordBord to the AFL in 2016. However, the number of Nordic tests conducted in the AFL has steadily increased over the years, despite a slight dip in these numbers over the past two seasons, likely due to the global pandemic and its impact on the 2020 and 2021 AFL seasons.

NRL

Comparable to the AFL, the median Nordic force result in the NRL has not changed significantly over the years and the distribution of results appears to be relatively stable, particularly over the past four seasons. Despite the median Nordic force results in the AFL and NRL being similar, the maximum observed results appear to be greater in the NRL compared to the AFL, with some athletes recording results greater than 700 N.
